In dynamic research labs, handling and managing chemicals presents substantial risks to personnel and the environment, including serious injuries or fatalities. Furthermore, regulatory requirements are becoming increasingly stringent, demanding increased oversight for chemical handling, storage, and disposal. To effectively manage these risks, labs must adopt a comprehensive safety strategy. Key components of such an approach include regularly updated training programs and detailed risk assessments that help identify and mitigate potential hazards before they lead to safety incidents. Ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols, including the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), is also vital.
Our Chemical Safety Checklist is designed to support lab managers in enhancing their safety protocols and serves as a handy reference tool for lab personnel. It offers actionable insights and structured guidance on various aspects of chemical safety, covering personal, employee, lab, and environmental protection. With this checklist, labs can reduce the risk of safety incidents, foster a culture of safety, and ensure alignment with regulatory standards.

SAFETY CHECKLIST
PERSONAL SAFETY
Read SDS and understand chemical hazards
Wear proper PPE, including gloves and a lab coat
Check glassware for chips and cracks
Never smell or taste chemicals
If chemicals splash on your eyes or skin, immediately wash with running water for at least 20 minutes
Keep your head out of the fume hood, the chemicals inside, and the sash down
Never engage in activities where you don't fully understand the risks involved
Ask plenty of questions
Look out for each other's safety
EMPLOYEE SAFETY
Identify and evaluate chemical hazards as part of a risk assessment (e.g., use the RAMP method)
Retain and organize safety data sheets on incoming chemicals in a central and accessible location
Create a chemical hygiene plan and effectively train all employees on it
Keep training current to ensure chemical hazard awareness and a thorough understanding of risk
Measure employee exposure to harmful substances and maintain a record
Perform regular lab safety inspections
Install monitors for highly hazardous chemicals
Have appropriate treatments and first-aid interventions available, and ensure that employees are trained on their usage
Never leave chemicals in active use unattended
Have a spill kit available with the appropriate containment materials
If a chemical spill occurs, clean it up appro- priately or call for help from the EHS team
LAB/ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY
Label all chemical containers fully
Segregate chemicals according to compatible groups and hazards
Store chemicals properly
Seal containers tightly to prevent the escape of vapors
Transport chemicals in a leak-proof secondary container that won't break if dropped
Keep eyewash stations and safety showers easily accessible and in good working order
Dispose of lab wastes properly
Do not pour chemicals down the sink
