Developing a robust process for promoting lab staff is a key element of enabling individuals to grow within the lab. Having defined paths to promotion help staff in many ways, including improving retention, morale, and emphasizing growth. To develop a promotion process, lab managers need to have a technical ladder that maps the growth of responsibility against different roles. It is often necessary to cooperate with HR and line management to get these ladders approved.
Once a system is in place to promote staff, lab managers need to clearly communicate the requirements to meet each step on the technical ladder. An effective way to help staff understand their status versus the expectations of each step is a development plan that details the skills and experience required to be successful at each level.
As an attendee, you will learn more about:
- Benefits of a promotion process
- Building a technical ladder
- Developing an elevator speech for each level
- Constructing effective development plans
- Determining when staff have earned a promotion
- Communicating around promotions
