Lab Manager is excited to announce its first annual Safety Excellence Awards, a program developed to recognize and celebrate the individuals, teams, and products that best demonstrate an improved safety culture in the lab.

Regardless of the size or type of lab you work in, establishing a culture of safety is imperative. Everyone in the lab plays a role in developing and sustaining safety culture and it is important to recognize individuals and organizations who are excelling at this challenge.

“We know that many of our readers put considerable effort into promoting their safety excellence. We want to recognize these initiatives and incentivize others to support their lab’s safety dynamics,” says Jonathan Klane, M.S.ED., CIH, CSP, CHMM, CIT, senior safety editor at Lab Manager.

Individuals, lab teams, and product manufacturers are encouraged to submit entries for the following three award categories:

  • Most Improved Safety Culture: Awarded to the lab or team who best exemplifies an improved safety culture since 2020. Changing the safety culture of a lab is a big challenge, and the winner of this award should demonstrate through storytelling and quantifiable metrics how this change was achieved.
  • Excellence in Safety Leadership: Awarded to an individual who best exemplifies leadership in lab safety. Entries should effectively tell a story of why this person is a good leader, how they drive a lab’s safety culture from the top-down, how they make their lab staff feel safer, how they’ve improved their lab’s productivity, and how their example encourages people to do their best work.
  • Innovative Safety Product Award: Awarded to a vendor who has developed an effective safety product or service for the laboratory industry within the last 18 months. Entries should explain why the product makes a lab safer and why it is a wise investment for those who work in a lab facility.

A panel of lab safety and risk experts will evaluate all entries and determine the winners for each category. Winners will be notified in December 2023.

“Our mission is to help our readers develop safety excellence in their labs,” says Klane. “The more we can do to recognize, encourage, and facilitate culture, leadership, and innovative products, the better off labs will be. We’re committed to doing our part to help all labs. As they say, ‘a rising tide lifts all boats.’ So, ‘raising safety excellence lifts all labs’, too.”

The Safety Excellence awards expand on Lab Manager’s awards program portfolio, which also includes the Leadership Excellence Awards (now in its third year). The Safety and Leadership Excellence Awards winners will be honored in-person at the 2024 Lab Manager Leadership Summit, April 29-May 1 in Denver, CO. Winners will also be featured in exclusive coverage published on Lab Manager.

Submissions are now open! The deadline to submit your entry into the Safety Excellence Awards is October 13, 2023. To submit your nomination or learn more about the Safety Excellence Awards program, the awards categories, and submission criteria, visit summit.labmanager.com/safetyawards
