The lab manager plays a vital role in ensuring proper chemical storage and handling practices within the laboratory. This presentation covers the basis components of the OSHA Lab Standard and the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard. The speaker will discuss conducting safety audits and inspections to identify potential hazards or deficiencies in chemical handling and storage practices.
The presentation continues to discuss purchasing and receiving chemicals. Proper labeling is covered in depth, as well as the use of PPE and transportation of chemicals. Elimination and substitution of hazardous materials are discussed and what to do when a spill does happen, including cleanup procedures. Exposures are addressed before delving into chemical storage and finally managing and disposing of hazardous waste.
The presentation will conclude with some of the business challenges faced by lab managers and a summary of the lab manager’s crucial role in creating and maintaining a safe environment for laboratory personnel and minimizing the risks associated with chemical handling and storage.
